Weller Full Proof showdown. Thievin' A vs specs

The Thievin' A bottle is from a recent pick that I got to participate in. Click here to learn more about the picking process.

Spec's: #110

N: It invites you in with morning dew. Light and crisp. As you get deeper in, there are loads of vanilla and purple fruit. Dates and raisins. Slight ethanol burn and a hint of bubble gum wrapped in caramel and oak. There's a faint trace of something metallic and something old; maybe leather book covers. I smell something sweet and playful but it's hard to pinpoint. Maybe dark red cherries. (9)

P: Metallic, astringent, ethanol, industrial cleaner, green apple skin. (5)

F: Dark fruit and oak. Quickly becomes very tannic. There's some melon rinds toward the very end. Finish just falls apart and lasts a minute or so. Maybe it needs some time to open up. I'm gonna leave it in the glass for a few minutes and come back. (5)

Upon my return. Not much has changed. I would say that it has more depth and sweetness than before but not enough to justify changing the score.

O: That was unexpectedly disappointing. I really expected more from the nose. I suppose that's how it goes sometimes. (19)

Thievin' A #230

N: White cherries greet you. An overarching toasted vanilla tone compliments the entirety of the nose. As you dive deeper, you run into your red cherries. Charred oranges and orange oil and very little, but noticeable ethanol burn. As it opens up, I smell birthday cake. It smells like what good bourbon should smell like. (9)

P: Green and red apple, slight ethanol, vanilla, and oak. (9)

F: Tropical fruit, vanilla, oak, chalk, cantaloupe, cake, and light, delicate tannins. Doesn't last too long but is oh so pleasant. (10)

O: I mean... I have no words. This barrel should have been a pappy. Maybe it would elevate that brand. JK. (28)
